FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Got Questions?
We’ve Got Answers!

Whether you’re new to axe throwing or just want to know how it all works,
we’ve got you covered. Here are some of the most common questions we get:
Do I need experience to throw an axe?
No experience? No problem! Our expert coaches will teach you everything you need to know—from how to hold the axe to landing your first bullseye. Most of our first-time throwers hit the target within minutes!
Is axe throwing safe?
Absolutely! Safety is our #1 priority. Our lanes are designed for controlled throwing, and our trained instructors provide safety briefings, proper technique guidance, and close supervision to ensure a safe and fun experience.
What should I wear?
Closed-toe shoes are required (no sandals or flip-flops). Other than that, wear something comfortable—you’ll be moving, so flexibility is key. Bonus points if you dress like a Viking.
Can I bring my own axe?
For safety reasons, we provide all throwing axes. However, if you’re a competitive thrower or experienced with your own axe, reach out to us first and we’ll see if we can accommodate!
Can I bring my own food or drinks?
We offer refreshments on-site, and some locations are BYOB-friendly (check your local rules). If you're booking a private event, we may allow outside catering—just ask us!
Is axe throwing good for groups & events?
Yes! Axe throwing is perfect for birthdays, corporate team-building, bachelor(ette) parties, and even date nights. We offer private lanes, event packages, and group discounts, so gather your crew and book a session!
Do I need to book or can I just walk in?
Walk-ins are welcome, however booking with your preferred Flying Fury Franchise beforehand will ensure you have access to a lane at your preferred time.
How does it work?
All events start with signing of an indemnity form per participant, a safety instruction, how to throw an axe and a couple of practice throws. Scorecards with the rules and various games are distributed… let the games begin!
Where will I be throwing my axe?
Flying Fury axe throwing lanes are built with safety in mind. Lanes are fully contained except for the entry opening. Furthermore, the floor covering is impact absorbent to ensure any axe not pegging in the target will drop safely without excessive bouncing. Side safety screens run the full length of the lane, and behind the thrower, the lane has a safety screen for the safety of all spectators and participants awaiting their turn.
Flying Fury provides safety protocol training to all franchisees to ensure they can offer axe throwing safely. All participants will be briefed on the safety protocols before you start. Only the active competitor whose turn it is, is allowed within the throwing area. All other competitors and spectators are required to wait behind the safety screens.
What is the minimum age requirement?
There are no minimum or maximum age requirements but rather, the participant must be able to easily pick-up and control their axe. Flying Fury franchises axes weigh in at around 600g.
Generally, anyone aged 12 and up should be pretty comfortable with the weight of the axe and able to compete safely. The practice throws will be under supervision to ensure every participant understands the safety protocols and can compete safely.
Participants younger than 18 will require that their indemnity form is signed by an adult.
What does it cost?
Flying Fury’s Recommended Retail Price for 2023:
Axe Throwing "Taster" - R50 for 3 throws "just to feel it out"
Axe Throwing - R150 for 3 practice throws + 10 Throws for points
Please note that price variance may occur between Flying Fury franchises and should be checked with the location you intend to visit.
